is the first step to ending it.

According to Louisiana law, human trafficking is when a person knowingly
recruits, harbors, transports, provides, solicits, sells, purchases, receives, isolates, entices, obtains or maintains
the use of another person through force, fraud, or coercion — for labor or sex.
If the person is under 21 years of age, it does not matter if the person is being maintained through force, fraud, or coercion.

Its important to be victim-centered

It’s important to know that a victim can be hostile, fearful, and likely won’t identify themselves as victims or ask for help.

Human trafficking violates basic human rights, often goes unseen, and requires community awareness and strong support systems to help survivors rebuild their lives.

Avoid judgmental language and terms like “What is wrong with this person?” and instead use “What happened to this person?” to respect their journey and avoid reinforcing a sense of helplessness. Prioritize listening, building trust, and allowing the individual to guide the conversation to foster a ense of safety and control.
